Vegan Pan de jamón aka Venezuelan Ham Bread is an alt version of the traditional Venezuelan Christmas bread, famous for its perfect balance of salty ham, sweet raisins, and briny green olives wrapped in golden dough. It shows up on nearly every holiday table across the world, wherever there are Venezuelans, acting as a symbol of festive warmth and togetherness. But making it from scratch?

Well, that’s a commitment most of us can’t afford between wrapping presents and explaining to relatives why we still don’t have a “real” job. This plant-based version offers the same nostalgic flavors, but in a quick and easy format. Yes, it’s vegan. Yes, it uses shortcuts. And no, there’s no shame in that. It still delivers all the sweet flavors and cozy joy of the original.
Why We’re Doing a Shortcut Version
We get it. The homemade version of pan de jamón, with dough made from scratch and carefully crafted vegan ham, is a work of art. But it’s also a work of hours. During this time of the year, a little help from the store is the only way anything gets done. Priorities.
This shortcut version uses store-bought pizza dough and pre-sliced vegan ham like Smoked Tofurky (in the USA) or Heura (in Spain and some of Europe, which is frankly MUCH healthier than Tofurky), and it’s still a delicious bread worthy of any holiday table.
Wait—Pizza Dough Works for This?
Yep. It sounds wild, but pizza dough totally works for pan de jamón. It bakes up soft, holds the spiral shape, and saves you hours. Pillsbury’s version is especially great, not just for flavor and texture, but because the size is practically made for this. A Venezuelan bakery chef gave my cousin the tip, and when it got to me? Instant convert.
Finding the Perfect Vegan Jamón (Ham)
There’s a whole ham-iverse of plant-based deli slices out there if you know where to look. In the U.S., Tofurky’s smoked slices are basically born for this recipe. In Spain (And some of Europe)? Heura’s ham is the hot cousin: leaner, cleaner, and just as flirty.
